Tropical Skips Cairns was established in the early 2000’s as a need was seen by the previous owners of the business to increase the capacity of waste disposal options in the region. The business had been sold a couple of times until Jared Lacco purchased it and is the current owner of the business since May of 2019.

Jared came to the business looking for a career change from working for various corporate manufacturers such as Fletcher building and more recently James Hardie. With the arrival of his first child on the way, Jared was looking at jobs that could base himself in Cairns and didn’t require the constant travel that was part of life previously.

Tropical Skips Cairns was on the market, and with some help from the dreaded banks and family, the purchase was finalised in May of 2019, one month after the arrival of his first daughter. Jared saw that a business like this could have some growth potential, and with the contacts he had both personally and professionally, the purchase led to some substantial growth quicker than anticipated. The business came with one employee and two trucks, and now there are 10 employees and 6 trucks in the fleet, with well over 400 bins in the total inventory.

Jared has a passion for improvements and developing of the business, so after a couple of years of running the business he saw an opportunity to create a team and a process to sort through the mixed waste skip bins which delivered returns both to the business and customers. This recycling process has developed further of the past few years and provides for 4 jobs to the local community, and has lead to an impressive 70% diversion of weight contained in the skips away from landfill

It was this that cemented Jareds passion for the business, given that the activities he was undertaking were having a positive effect on the environment.
